Tough Opening Round at Christie Park as We Look to Build

Our 2026 NPL NSW Men’s campaign began with a tough 1-0 loss away to NWS Spirit FC at Christie Park.

With a new group coming together and several players returning to Christie Park for the first time as competitors, there was no shortage of intensity from the opening whistle. We started brightly, controlling large periods of possession early and showing positive intent as we looked to impose ourselves on the match.

Nicholas Olsen battling against tough opposition.

Our best opportunity of the first half fell to Tariq Maia, whose goal-bound effort was superbly turned away by the Spirit goalkeeper at full stretch. Despite our pressure, Spirit found the breakthrough in the 32nd minute from a set piece, scoring against the run of play to take a narrow lead into the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with us pushing forward and spending extended time in the attacking third as we searched for an equaliser. The match took a serious turn in the 70th minute when an incident resulted in a red card being shown. Jamie Percevski suffered a significant injury in the process. The club has since released a statement regarding the incident and will make no further comment while the matter remains under judicial review.

Playing with a numerical advantage for the final stages, we continued to press and ask questions, but Spirit defended resolutely, and we were unable to find the breakthrough our performance deserved.

While the result is not what we wanted, there were encouraging signs throughout the night. With a brand new squad, a new staff group and plenty of moving parts, this was an important first step in building cohesion and understanding. There is plenty to take from the performance, and we will continue to grow as this group gels in the weeks ahead.

Our focus now turns to recovery, reflection and getting back to work as we prepare for the next challenge.
