Greg O’Rourke Awarded Prestigious Charles Valentine Medal

The Sutherland Sharks are proud to share that our President, Greg O’Rourke, was awarded the Charles Valentine Medal at last night’s Football NSW Gala Awards, held at the Winx Pavilion, Royal Randwick.

The Charles Valentine Medal is one of the highest honours in New South Wales football, recognising individuals whose service to the game has been both extraordinary and enduring.

A Lifetime of Commitment

Greg’s involvement in football spans decades, beginning as a player and coach at Heathcote and St John Bosco before moving into leadership roles that have shaped the game at every level.

He has served as:

  • President of the Sutherland Shire Football Association (2008–2011)

  • Chair of Football NSW (2011–2016)

  • Commissioner of the A-League (2016–2023)

  • President of Sutherland Sharks (2025–present)

Across these roles, Greg has been a driving force behind major reforms and initiatives, from the redevelopment of Valentine Sports Park and the integration of A-League academies into State League competitions, to championing the growth of women’s football.

As A-League Commissioner, Greg was a strong advocate for women’s football, leading expansion and improved player conditions, as well as negotiating a landmark five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

A Proud Moment for the Sharks

Greg’s recognition is a testament to his vision, leadership, and tireless contribution to the game in New South Wales and beyond.

He now becomes only the second person from Sutherland Sharks to receive this honour, following Paul Smith in 2017.

On behalf of everyone at the club, we congratulate Greg on this well-deserved award.

Congratulations, Greg!
