Gan Debuts, Moric Scores, but We Fall Short Against Spirit

Saturday at Seymour Shaw marked a special moment for the Sharks as Brendan Gan made his long-awaited debut in the red and white, bringing elite experience and leadership back home after years playing abroad and representing Malaysia. His presence lifted the team and the crowd, setting the stage for a spirited battle against one of the league’s in-form sides, NWS Spirit FC.

We started the match with real intent, pressing high and looking to take the game to Spirit. Gan was straight into the action, linking well with the midfield and delivering a clever ball forward to kick-start our first meaningful attack. The move ended with Kotaro Katsuta curling an effort just over the bar, a sign of things to come in what was a promising opening spell.

Despite our early dominance, it was the visitors who found the breakthrough in the 18th minute. Michael Konestabo cut inside and, with a touch of fortune from a deflection, snuck the ball in at the near post to give Spirit the lead.

We responded well, refusing to drop our heads. Gan nearly equalised moments later with a powerful shot that had the Seymour Shaw faithful rising to their feet, but it drifted just wide. Danijel Nizic continued to show why he’s been one of the best keepers in the league this season, pulling off a miraculous point-blank save to deny Konestabo a second before denying Takumi Ofuka soon after.

We went into the break just a goal down, having weathered some pressure but also created chances of our own.

The second half saw the Sharks remain committed and cohesive, but a penalty awarded against us in the 60th minute, after a coming together between Mason Fernandez and Harry Keys, handed Spirit the chance to double their lead. Konestabo converted from the spot to make it 2-0.

Nizic again came to the rescue shortly after, making another strong save at the near post to keep us in the contest.

As we pushed forward in search of a lifeline, Spirit capitalised on the space behind and added a third. Substitute Hiroaki Okubo unleashed an unstoppable strike from outside the area, finding the top corner in a moment of real quality.

Still, we kept fighting. In stoppage time, Matthew Moric broke through and calmly finished to pull one back for the Sharks, a deserved goal that reflected the effort and intent shown throughout the match. Seconds later, a slip at the back from Spirit nearly gifted us a second, but the ball just wouldn’t fall in our favour.

While the 3-1 loss was tough to take, there were plenty of positives in our performance, from Gan’s composed debut to the team’s never-say-die attitude. Against a side pushing for the premiership, we showed moments of quality, energy and belief that we’ll look to build on as we enter a crucial stretch of the season.

We now turn our attention to this Saturday’s home clash against Blacktown City.
