Trent McClenahan Joins Sharks as General Manager
Sutherland Sharks FC is thrilled to announce the appointment of Trent McClenahan as the club’s new General Manager. McClenahan – a former professional footballer turned seasoned administrator – will bring a wealth of experience from both on-field success and high-level football operations to his local Sutherland Shire club. His arrival comes at a pivotal time for the Sharks, as the club embarks on an ambitious growth phase and seeks strong leadership to drive its football, commercial, and community initiatives.
A Stellar Playing Career
McClenahan boasts an exceptional playing background that includes the English Premier League and the National team. Some highlights of his on-field career include:
English Premier League Beginnings: McClenahan signed with famed English club West Ham United in 2002 at just 17 years old, becoming part of the West Ham first-team squad in his teens.
International Honours: Trent represented Australia as a member of the Olyroos (under-23 national team), featuring in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games football tournament. Appearing on the Olympic stage is a testament to his talent and dedication as a player.
A-League and Abroad: Following his time in the UK, McClenahan returned to Australia and competed in the A-League with clubs such as Perth Glory, Central Coast Mariners, and Sydney FC, bringing home valuable domestic experience. He also spent seasons in Scotland and Asia, before eventually wrapping up his playing days closer to home in the NSW NPL.
This rich playing resume gives McClenahan a deep understanding of the game from a player’s perspective – experience that will be invaluable in managing the football operations at the Sharks.
High-Level Football Operations Expertise
Off the field, McClenahan has built an equally impressive career in football administration. Most notably, he has been serving as Head of Football Operations for the A-Leagues since 2023. In that senior A-Leagues role, McClenahan oversaw the competition’s key football departments and initiatives. This experience at the pinnacle of Australian football administration speaks volumes about his capabilities.
Bringing Trent on board is a major coup for the Sharks. As General Manager, McClenahan will be responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of Sutherland Sharks, overseeing all key functions including football operations, match-day experience, club administration, community engagement, and commercial performance. Sharks President Greg O’Rourke noted that McClenahan’s expertise aligns perfectly with the Sharks’ plans:
“Trent’s appointment is a tremendous win for our club,” said Greg O’Rourke. “His experience as both an elite player and as a senior administrator in the A-Leagues will be an enormous asset. Trent understands what it takes to succeed at the highest levels of the game, and he also appreciates the importance of strong community foundations. We believe he will drive our club to new heights on and off the field.”
O’Rourke, himself a former Head of the A-League and past Commissioner of the Australian Professional Leagues, understands the value of McClenahan’s insights. Both leaders share a vision of elevating the Sharks by applying professional standards while nurturing local talent.
Homegrown Passion and Community Commitment
Although he built a career around the world, Trent is a Sydney product at heart and a long-time Sutherland Shire resident. In fact, he remains actively involved in grassroots football – he still laces his boots for Como each weekend and coaches his son’s team at Cronulla Seagulls, exemplifying his passion for the game at every level.
Trent expressed his enthusiasm about taking on the General Manager role at a club so close to home:
“I’m extremely excited to step into this role with Sutherland Sharks – it’s a club that means a great deal to me,” McClenahan said. “Having grown up with football in NSW and now living in the Sutherland Shire, I’m proud to be able to give back to my local community through the game I love. The Sharks have a strong history and an ambitious future, and I’m eager to help drive that forward. I look forward to working with the players, coaches, and committee to build on the club’s success and create an environment where our talent can thrive.”
In his new position, McClenahan will officially start on Monday, 4 August, and will immediately begin implementing the club’s vision. The timing could not be better: Sutherland Sharks FC has recently completed a major facility upgrade and is expanding its programs as it enters a period of exciting growth and transformation. With Trent at the helm of day-to-day operations, the Sharks are confident in achieving their strategic goals. We invite everyone in the Sharks family to join us in welcoming Trent and celebrating the start of this exciting new chapter for our club.
