Sharks Show Grit in Narrow Loss to Blacktown City

We visited a strong Blacktown City side at Landen Stadium on Saturday, ultimately falling just short in a tightly contested 1-0 battle.

It was Blacktown’s Jak O’Brien’s with a brilliant volley in the 9th minute that proved the difference on the night. Despite that early blow, the Sharks showed plenty of heart and determination, pushing hard for an equaliser right to the final whistle.

Windy conditions across Sydney played havoc with aerial balls, particularly crosses, and both teams had to adjust quickly. The early stages were scrappy, but Blacktown found their opener through a sharp piece of build-up play on the right. Mitch Mallia whipped in a dangerous ball and O’Brien met it sweetly from the edge of the box, giving Danijel Nizic no chance.

To our credit, we weren’t rattled. The boys dug in, kept shape, and began to work our way into the game. Defensively, we were disciplined and showed just how far we’ve come this season under Steve Zoric, particularly when compared to last year. It was a gritty, hard-nosed display that frustrated Blacktown for large periods.

Nizic, in particular, was outstanding between the sticks, pulling off a string of quality saves to keep us in the contest. He denied Martin Fernandez twice and was quick off his line to smother other dangerous opportunities. Credit where it’s due—Mallia had a big night for them down the right flank, but we held firm and never allowed City to truly take control.

We made changes early in the second half, with Peter Grozos coming on to add spark in midfield. He had a late strike from distance, but it didn’t quite trouble the keeper. Our pressure in the closing stages was relentless as we chased a leveller, but Blacktown’s defence stood tall.

While we didn’t come away with the points, there were plenty of positives to take. The defensive structure is solid, the belief is strong, and we’ll be ready to bounce back next week.

Thanks to everyone who made the trip to support the boys—your voices were heard all night.
