Woodwork Woes as Sharks Fall 2-0 on Anzac Day
The Sutherland Sharks fought hard but ultimately went down 2-0 to Sydney FC in a tense ANZAC Day encounter at Ilinden Sports Centre.
It was an even and gritty first half with little to separate the two sides. The Sharks held firm against Sydney’s early advances, and we almost found the breakthrough when Peter Grozos unleashed a cracking long-range effort that rattled the woodwork — agonisingly close to putting us ahead.
Unfortunately, the luck didn’t fall our way. An early second-half goal from Marin France gave the Sky Blues a lift, and despite our determined defending, Sydney managed to double their advantage with a penalty converted by Mathias Macallister in the 79th minute.
Throughout the contest, our boys showed real fight and resilience. Danijel Nizic was superb between the sticks, pulling off a string of strong saves, while Peter Grozos led the line with energy and creativity. We had our chances — Matthew Moric also hit the woodwork — but it just wasn’t our day.
The result leaves us still searching for a turnaround, but the heart and commitment shown on ANZAC Day gives us something to build on as we prepare for a big clash next week.
Thanks to all the fans who came out to support us — we’ll keep fighting for you!
