Held To A Draw: We're Left Frustrated At Home
NPL NSW Men's
We were made to settle for a share of the points on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Sydney Olympic at Seymour Shaw Park in a game we really felt we should have won.
Diego & Richie frustrated by the result
We made the perfect start when a neat interchange between Takumi Ofuka and Nick Olsen let Olsen break into the box. Shaping to cross, he instead fired into the near corner from a tight angle to put us 1-0 up inside five minutes.
Nicholas Olsen celebrating his early goal
From there we kept creating opportunities. Daniel Nizic was called into action at the other end to deny Panayioti Armenakas, before Olympic keeper Filip Kurto produced a brilliant save to keep out Jordan Perez's thunderous free kick. The intensity boiled over soon after, with a brief melee resulting in several yellow cards on both sides. We came agonisingly close to doubling our lead when Perez headed goalward from close range, only for Kurto to react instinctively and tip the effort onto the crossbar. Despite our pressure, Olympic went close themselves right on the stroke of half time through a long-range effort that bounced awkwardly in front of Nizic, who did well to gather.
Diego looking to beat 4 Olympic players
Olympic started the second half positively, firing over our crossbar inside the opening 90 seconds, but we soon settled back into the contest. The game opened up as we dropped a bit deeper and looked to hit them on the counter, and Olympic grew in confidence knowing the one-goal margin kept them in it. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Samuel Bosnjak got on the end of an inch-perfect cross from Armenakas to level the scores, and they almost turned it around completely moments later before Nizic denied a follow-up header.
We regrouped and pushed hard for a winner. Tariq Maia tested Kurto again, who produced another full-stretch save to tip it over. Richard Shoueiki came off the bench and almost had an immediate impact, latching onto a cutback from Diego Bonilla only to crash his strike against the woodwork. We threw everything forward late, and deep into stoppage time Bonilla had a golden chance to snatch it when he latched onto a long ball from Nizic, but his effort flashed narrowly wide.
Frustrations taking over for both sides
It's a frustrating one. We had the chances to win it and couldn't find the finish when it mattered, and Kurto deserves plenty of credit for the point Olympic walked away with. Still, we sit 4th on goal difference, with Rockdale level with us on points and Sydney FC just one behind, so there's no time to dwell on it.
It sets up a huge one this Sunday when we head to Rockdale, with real implications for both sides' Australian Championship qualification hopes.
