Stalemate at Popondetta: Sharks Battle for a Hard-Fought Draw

Returning to the road for the first time in two weeks, we were determined to turn recent form around—and while we couldn’t quite find the back of the net, the effort, grit and intensity shown across the park give us plenty to build on ahead of a huge clash next week.

The match kicked off with the Rangers pressing early, looking to stamp their authority. We stood firm, with Danijel Nizic again leading from the back and keeping us in it during the opening stages. After absorbing some early pressure, we started to find our rhythm.

Ikko Ehode Arimoto made an instant impact when coming on, forcing a save from distance that had the Rangers' keeper scrambling. It was a positive sign that we were ready to match their intensity. While both sides created chances, the match remained goalless at the break.

We came out firing in the second half, controlling possession and playing with purpose. Lucas Ciaramella nearly got us on the board with a first-time strike, then came close again with a header shortly after.

The introduction of Peter Grozos and Dylan Susovic added fresh energy, both testing the Rangers’ defence with shots that just didn’t dip in time. As the pressure mounted, we looked the more likely of the two sides to grab a winner.

At the other end, Rangers had a couple of nervy moments, but our defence held strong, with Danijel Nizic making a crucial late save to keep the scores level.

Post-match, Steven Zoric praised the effort and second-half performance:

“I thought we should’ve got something from that game because we dominated that second half. We’ve got a lot of injuries and suspensions, but the young boys who stepped in did really well. Now it’s about getting numbers in the box and attacking with intent—we need goals and we’ll be pushing hard for them.”

Despite the draw, the mood remains upbeat. With a return home next week against the Marconi Stallions, we know it won’t be easy, but we’re ready to fight and give you something to cheer about.

Bring on next weekend. Up the Sharks!
