Maki’s Goalscoring Form Continues in St George Draw

We returned to Seymour Shaw on Saturday afternoon, determined to bounce back from last week’s disappointment and put in a strong showing against a talented St George FC side. And while we felt we did enough to take all three points, a 1-1 draw was ultimately a fair reflection of an end-to-end contest that had everything.

It was a dream start for us. Just three minutes in, Maki Petratos showed his class once again, calmly slotting the ball past the Saints’ keeper to give us an early lead. That’s four goals in three games now for Maki, who continues to deliver in key moments.

Danijel Nizic was called into action shortly after, making a sharp stop to deny Justin Poon and keep our noses in front. But as the half wore on, St George found their rhythm and capitalised just before the break. A well-delivered free kick was met by their skipper Troy Danaskos, whose header found the net to level things at 1-1 heading into half-time.

Tye McGowan was nearly the difference maker, breaking through the Saints’ back line only to be denied by a fantastic save from Mackenzie Syron.

As both sides chased a winner, the game opened up with chances falling at either end. A frantic goalmouth scramble nearly saw us edge ahead, but the Saints managed to clear their lines and launch a dangerous counter that earned them a corner.

We kept pushing. Jordan Roberts saw his free kick deflected out for another corner, and Matthew Moric had a late effort slide just wide. At the other end, substitute Chan Yelchan caused problems for our defence but couldn’t find the target either.

In the end, neither side could land the knockout blow. It was a fierce, physical derby with no shortage of drama and determination.

A point each felt about right in the end and we take plenty of positives from a performance full of grit and attacking intent. We showed real fight and composure throughout and responded well to last week’s setback.

Next up, we’re back on the road as we look to build on this result and keep climbing.
